Step One: Manufacturing the Lead
The initial stage of pencil production involves creating the lead. This process requires key materials such as graphite powder, white clay powder, and water. Graphite powder, a form of carbon, is often mistaken for lead due to its similar color, but pencil leads are not made from lead. White clay powder, acting as a binder, hardens the mixture to ensure the lead's durability.
After meticulous preparation, the materials are fed into specialized machinery. Through precise grinding and shaping processes, a refined graphite column emerges.
This carefully crafted graphite column is then placed into a specialized extrusion machine, ready for the next stage of processing.
Next, the specialized extrusion machine performs its remarkable task, meticulously compressing the graphite column into slender pencil leads.
These elongated pencil leads are then transported to a drying area for sun exposure. Once dried, they undergo a precise cutting process. Finally, these semi-finished pencil leads enter a kiln for baking at 815°C. Through this intricate series of processes, a resilient pencil lead with excellent writing properties is successfully produced.
Step Two
Wood Groove Fabrication
Next comes the challenge: how to securely embed the pencil lead into the wood? This pencil factory selects premium California cedar wood and employs specialized techniques to meticulously craft grooves perfectly suited for the lead.
Each piece of wood is precisely cut into strips measuring 18 centimeters long and 0.5 centimeters wide.
These strips then pass through an assembly line where a large cutting gear machine swiftly carves grooves into them, specifically designed to hold the pencil lead.
The strips then move to the next machine, which fills the carved grooves with adhesive. This adhesive contains a special elastic solvent that protects the pencil lead, ensuring it remains intact within the groove.
Step Three
Inserting the Leads
Now, the prepared leads can be safely inserted one by one. Each lead is meticulously arranged by the machine, awaiting the next process.
Groups of eight leads are systematically placed onto the wooden board.
The assembled leads then slide along the conveyor belt to another machine, where another wooden strip is placed on top.
Simply closing the board is insufficient. Next, a machine weighing several tons presses the pencil for one hour. Only after this step is seventy percent of the pencil's production complete.
Step Four
Cutting the assembled lead boards
Each pencil is individually cut from the board
The final shape is the familiar hexagon.
Next, any residual wood shavings on the pencil surface undergo a brief cleanup.
Step Five
The pencil surface is coated with paint, followed by the application of the brand label, thus concluding our production process.
To create pencils with erasers, we simply add one more step: attaching the eraser. This process is quick and straightforward-a gentle clamp secures it in place, and the job is done.
